Cesc Fabregas gives his honest opinion on Spain's Euro 2020 chances

The former Arsenal and Chelsea midfielder starred for Spain during their glory years between 2008 and 2012, while he believes there are similarities to the current squad

Former Spain midfielder Cesc Fabregas is optimistic about his nation's current squad and has drawn parallels between them and the winning squad in 2008.

The midfield maestro was part of the squads that won three major trophies for La Roja; the European Championships titles in 2008 and 2012, alongside the 2010 World Cup.

It is widely believed that this version of the Spanish national team is not in the same class as their most successful ever side, while boss Luis Enrique's selection process has not been without controversy.

For the first time ever, no Real Madrid players have been selected for the international team for a major tournament - with the nation's most capped player Sergio Ramos among those overlooked.

His club teammates Nacho Fernandez, Marco Asensio, Dani Carvajal and Lucas Vazquez - the latter two miss out through injury - are among those to miss the cut.

Celta Vigo in-form striker Iago Aspas and Sevilla captain Jesus Navas were also controversially overlooked alongside title-winning Atletico Madrid duo Saul Niguez and Mario Hermoso.

However, there are plenty of reasons for optimism for Spain - they go into the tournament with just one defeat in their last 24 matches across all competitions, and defeated Germany 6-0 in their Nations League meeting last November.

Just as with 2008, they have a number of exciting youngsters - most notably Barcelona 's 18-year-old midfielder Pedri and Manchester City 's exciting attacker Ferran Torres, who has six goals in 11 international caps.

Furthermore, Luis Enrique's side have a relatively kind group; being paired with Sweden, Poland and Slovakia with all three games being played in the intense summer heat of Seville.

That has led to reasons for optimism, with current Monaco midfielder Fabregas telling an interview Goal : "We should be here to support them. I don't like it when we are complaining before the tournament starts about the squad.

"I had it in 2008 when I was 21, I think. There was Silva and Iniesta coming through, and everyone was doubting us a bit because Raul, [Michel] Salgado, [Santiago] Canizares and [David] Albelda weren't called up.

"All those players were cast aside to make space for us young players. We ended up winning the tournament and I don't think I need to repeat what happened after.

"It is about giving opportunities and that's what Luis Enrique has done.

"It will not be easy for Spain, but no competition at the top, top level is simple. They just have to compete. It is a young team but they have proven that they can play well in qualification.

"Luis Enrique was a player and is a coach with a lot of personality, good ideas and he will not want to make things difficult for himself. He wants to do his best and we need to support him and go along with it.

"We will be behind the team and I hope we can do well."
