How close Man Utd are to signing each of the five players on their transfer list

Man Utd are in the market for a centre-half this summer and had previously identified five targets whilst they also look to make additions in attack with Jadon Sancho on their radar

Manchester United are hoping to be busy in the transfer window with several players on their shopping list.

The Red Devils again improved in the Premier League under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer finishing second, one place better than the season prior, and a keen to build on that momentum.

A slow start undermined their campaign however and that was partly down to a poor summer of recruitment that saw them miss out on plenty of their preferred targets.

Donny van de Beek was signed but failed to make an impression whilst Edinson Cavani and Alex Telles were both added following several concerning defeats.

Cavani's arrival proved to be a major plus, but United's deficiencies were clear throughout the year.

One place they remain short is at centre-half with Solskjaer desperate to find a partner for Harry Maguire.

ESPN reported that Raphael Varane, Tyrone Mings, Jules Kounde, David Carmo and Dayot Upamecano were all under consideration.

So which defender are Man Utd likely to sign?

Well those five options are now down to four following Upamecano's move to Bayern Munich.

The French defender caught everyone's attention with a sensational performance in the 2020 Champions League quarter-final between RB Leipzig and Atletico Madrid.

United and Liverpool were among the English sides credited with interest but ultimately it was Bayern who again raided their domestic rivals.

Varane now seems the most likely man to move to Old Trafford as his Real Madrid contract winds down.

The Frenchman has shown no desire to pen an extension and is open to a new challenge.

United could look to benefit from his contract situation by signing the centre-half for less than his market value.

Mings is currently away with England alongside Maguire and has made himself a regular with the Three Lions.

The 28-year-old has been able to resurrect his career at Aston Villa and has become a mainstay in defence.

Moving to United would certainly be tempting for any Premier League player, even if Villa are in the ascendancy.

Solskjaer has placed an emphasis on adding English talent where possible which could further the case for Mings.

Who would be the ideal centre-half signing? Have your say below.

Kounde and Carmo are both unlikely to move but remain options for the Red Devils should they be unable to add any of their main targets.

The former especially has enjoyed an impressive year with Sevilla and played in the side who beat United in the 2020 Europa League.

The Spanish side have slapped a hefty £50mprice tag on Kounde, who is also of interest to Chelsea and Arsenal.

Braga's Carmo, who at 21 is tipped for big things, recently sustained a major injury and depending on its severity it could impact United's decision to pursue him.

Who else are Man Utd eyeing in the transfer market?

Jadon Sancho is the man United want having missed out on him last year.

Borussia Dortmund have rejected their opening offer, which was tabled on Thursday, and remain someway off the German side's valuation.

There will be concerns that United are set to make the same mistake twice as they haggle over a price that Dortmund aren't prepared to negotiate on.

A winger is on Solskjaer's wishlist and Sancho is seen as the perfect candidate and would further strengthen an attack that includes Marcus Rashford, Mason Greenwood and Bruno Fernandes.

Harry Kane is another forward to be linked with an Old Trafford switch.

The Tottenham striker could find himself on the open market having expressed a desire to leave north London.

Daniel Levy will be reluctant to let him go, but if Kane digs his heels in and can force through an exit then plenty will be keen on his signature.

United have prospered over the years by adding quality from their rivals and Kane could be another example.

His desire to play through the middle is also a plus with many of United's attackers preferring to operate from wider positions.

Club chief Ed Woodward has said that the club will look to invest further in the squad.

"We will continue to support Ole with a planned, long-term approach to recruitment, focused on the summer windows," he explained.
