Mourinho says Kane will 'always be my boy' and needs help from England stars at Euros

talksport.com, 11 June 2021, 11:03
Former Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho believes other England players will need to step up and score goals to ease the burden on 'his boy' Harry Kane.

In their final two friendlies before Euro 2020, the Three Lions managed two 1-0 victories, with Kane playing just 61 minutes as Gareth Southgate managed his time on the pitch.

Mourinho coached Kane at Tottenham for 18 months, with the striker in brilliant form over that period.

In the Premier League he won the Golden Boot and the Playmaker Award last season having scored 23 goals and created 14 for teammates, like Heung-Min Son.

After a season like that, as well as winning the Golden Boot at the 2018 World Cup, expectations are high for Kane, who is tipped to be the top scorer.

And Mourinho, who has joined talkSPORT for Euro 2020 and was on Breakfast alongside Alan Brazil and Ray Parlour for an hour on Friday, gave his thoughts on the situation his star finds himself in.

He told the talkSPORT Breakfast: "He pays the price of his success and he pays the price of his numbers. People expect him to score goals all the time, which is what he does."

Host Brazil queried whether having another striker alongside the Spurs star might take pressure off him at the tournament, but Mourinho feels it wouldn't suit the player.

"I don't think he's very comfortable with it," he replied. "I don't think he's even used to it.

"What I think is needed is what we tried at Tottenham is that he drops so much and gets in between the lines and is such a technical player that he can assist and can link the play.

"If you do that and you don't have a player who looks for depth then you find someone who moves the ball but not being dangerous. So I believe they need that.

"In the end, he would naturally drop and leave his area, come deeper and get the ball. Great vision, passing and change of direction and explore the opposite full-back.

"He has all of this. You cannot say only he can score goals. Other guys have to have that responsibility too."

Kane was reportedly still close Mourinho prior to his sacking in April.

When Parlour asked the Portuguese if he'd spoken to his former charge, he revealed he had already messaged him but was now allowing him to get down to business.

He revealed: "I did yesterday [text him]. Now it's time to [stand back].

"I know how players are and now it's time to close the door and leave them in their room with family and close friends.

"From my side, when a player is my boy, he's always my boy even when we don't work together."
