Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is ready to welcome Chris Smalling back into his squad next season.

The 30-year-old has impressed on loan at Roma in 2019/20 and declared he was 'gutted' that he cannot finish the season with the Italian club after his spell ended this week.

Roma are still playing in the Europa League but were unable to reach an agreement with United to extend the central defender's stay.

"I'm gutted that I can't finish what we started this season,' Smalling said in a message on Instagram.

"To experience the love shown to me in such a short time was extra special and it will not be forgotten.

"I want to thank and wish all the players and staff the best of luck against Sevilla. DAJE ROMA!"
