Team News
A first-team player from Aberdeen tested positive for coronavirus as British sport continued to feel the effects of the ongoing pandemic on and off the field. An Aberdeen first-team player has tested positive for coronavirus, the Scottish Premiership club have announced. The Dons confirmed no other members of the first-team, coaching staff or essential staff at the training ground tested positive. Motherwell have secured the signing of Mark O'Hara on a two-year deal. The midfielder made 20 appearances on loan from Peterborough last season and Motherwell have bought him for what they described as a "nominal" fee. Jonny Hayes was so desperate to clinch a return to Aberdeen he made the decision to defer his wages for a year. Steven Gerrard expects Rangers to complete more signings after being satisfied by the financial landscape presented by the Ibrox board. Rangers manager Steven Gerrard expects more signings after being satisfied by the financial landscape presented by the Ibrox board. Sunderland goalkeeper Jon McLaughlin has become Gerrard's fourth summer signing after the earlier capture of Calvin Bassey from Leicester and permanent deals for former loan players Ianis Hagi and Jermain Defoe. All 42 of Scotland's league clubs have been awarded £50,000 grants following the donation made by philanthropist James Anderson. Aberdeen, Celtic and Kilmarnock will hand their allocations to their charity wings while all other clubs successfully demonstrated how their wider communities would benefit from the money. Aberdeen say Jonny Hayes made a "significant financial sacrifice" to return to Pittodrie. The Irish winger has signed a two-year contract after setting his sights on a move back to Aberdeen following three seasons at Celtic. St Mirren have signed goalkeeper Jak Alnwick from Rangers on a two-year contract. The 27-year-old joins Jim Goodwin 's squad following the departure of Vaclav Hladky. Motherwell have denied taking advantage of the coronavirus crisis during contract negotiations with the departed Richard Tait. The defender revealed he had walked away from talks in a point of principle because he had been offered reduced terms after signing a contract, and expressed his disappointment at a lack of communication from the club. Just when a technicality looked to have denied Inverness Caledonian Thistle their first Scottish Premier League stint, the very same issue came to their rescue on this day in 2004. The coronavirus pandemic has had a huge impact on every walk of life, and sport is no exception. Almost every sporting competition, including the Olympics, European Championship and Premier League, was put on hold as the world's attention turned to getting the pandemic under control. New St Mirren signing Richard Tait has revealed his disappointment with the way his Motherwell career ended after the club tried to renegotiate terms on a contract he had already signed. Aberdeen chairman Dave Cormack has declared the club have offset half of their predicted £10million coronavirus hit. The Dons opened talks with players and other staff last week over making wage cuts and other savings amid the prospect of playing behind closed doors for the first few months of the season. Dundee are the latest Scottish club to instigate major cuts as Celtic manager Neil Lennon warned the champions were not immune from the coronavirus crisis. Ryan Fraser has played his final game for Bournemouth, manager Eddie Howe has revealed. St Mirren have signed former Motherwell defender Richard Tait. Tait has signed a two-year deal with Jim Goodwin 's side after leaving Fir Park when his contract expired. Sports lawyer David Winnie feels Hearts have a chance of overturning their relegation in court. The former St Mirren and Aberdeen defender believes there are several avenues Hearts can pursue if their case goes to court. Aberdeen have opened talks with players over implementing wage cuts. Dons chairman Dave Cormack recently estimated that the Scottish Premiership side faced a £9million hole in their income - the equivalent of their annual football budget - because of the impact of the coronavirus pandemic. Scotland will face Israel on October 8 in their delayed Euro 2020 play-off. Confirmation came after a UEFA executive committee meeting which decided dates for a number of competitions. Bournemouth winger Ryan Fraser has turned down a short-term contract extension. The Aberdeen-born winger, who joined the Cherries from his hometown club in 2013, will be out of contract at the end of this month. Rangers were among the latest squads to report back for pre-season training as Scottish Premiership clubs prepare for an August 1 kick-off. Steven Gerrard and his players arrived at their Auchenhowie training ground near Glasgow on Monday morning for the first session since the coronavirus pandemic halted action in March. Aberdeen have confirmed the departures of Frank Ross and Danny Rogers. The Dons remain in "positive talks" with back-up goalkeeper Tomas Cerny, who is also out of contract. Scottish clubs have been asked to consider introducing an expanded 14-team top flight which would leave the rest of the league as it stands. The move comes after the failure to garner enough support for Hearts owner Ann Budge's suggestion for three divisions of 14, and a proposal from Rangers to have an 18-team bottom tier involving colts teams from themselves and Celtic. Aberdeen midfielder Lewis Ferguson has scooped the Scottish Football Writers' Association Young Player of the Year award. The 20-year-old saw off competition from Motherwell's Allan Campbell, St Johnstone midfielder Ali McCann and Hearts full-back Aaron Hickey to be named DoubleTree by Hilton young player of the year. St Mirren midfielder Ryan Flynn can see some light at the end of the tunnel in his route back from injury, further boosted by signing a new contract. The 31-year-old suffered cruciate ligament damage in February but was offered a new deal. Aberdeen are committed to getting a Covid-19 testing machine but lower-league clubs have been told the costs of the screening regime will be prohibitive. Scottish Championship clubs aim to play a full season from October, Morton chief executive Dave MacKinnon has revealed. An increased number of midweek games would take place later in the campaign to allow the division to catch up when fans have more of a chance of being allowed in grounds. Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly both cooled their interest in Bournemouth 's Ryan Fraser. The Scotland international's existing contract at the Vitality Stadium is due to expire at the end of June, and he is widely expected to move on ahead of the 2020-21 campaign. St Mirren have lost Vaclav Hladky after the goalkeeper rejected a new contract offer. The 29-year-old played a major role in keeping Saints in the Scottish Premiership during his 18 months in Paisley, especially when saving three penalties in a play-off final shoot-out against Dundee United a year ago.
